ORAL CANCER SCREENINGS

Oral cancer is a serious condition affecting the mouth, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, and throat. Early detection plays a crucial role in reducing the severity of the disease and improving survival rates. Regular check-ups at Blooming Dental and being aware of the signs and symptoms can make a significant difference.

SIGNS OF ORAL CANCER

- Persistent Sores: One of the most common signs is a sore in the mouth that doesn’t heal within two weeks. These sores can appear anywhere in the mouth, including the lips, gums, or throat.
- White or Red Patches: Look out for unusual white (leukoplakia) or red (erythroplakia) patches inside the mouth. These patches can be precancerous and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
- Unexplained Bleeding or Numbness: Unexplained bleeding or numbness in the mouth or on the lips could be a sign of oral cancer. Persistent pain or tenderness in the mouth can also be an indication.

PREVENTION

Preventing oral cancer involves a combination of lifestyle choices and regular medical check-ups. Here are key steps to reduce your risk:

- Avoid Tobacco and Limit Alcohol: Tobacco use in any form (smoking or chewing) significantly increases the risk of oral cancer. Excessive alcohol consumption also raises the risk, especially when combined with tobacco use.

- Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups help in early detection and prevention of oral health issues, including cancer. A clean mouth is less likely to develop lesions that can turn into cancer.

- Protect Your Lips from the Sun: Prolonged sun exposure can increase the risk of lip cancer. Use a lip balm with SPF protection and try to stay in the shade when possible.
